If you want to see big growth in the spring, you will have to feed the roots in the middle to end of October. Fertilizing in the fall gives some of the nutrients time to filter into the ground and be next to the roots when they begin absorbing water in the spring.

You can use compost around the drip line of the tree.
If you choose a fertilizer, you don’t want to feed the tree nitrogen this time. Choose a fertilizer with 0 as the first number and a high number for the second two.

Having the ground around the roots already full of the nutrients they need will cause the tree to pump this food up to the growth points along with the stored carbohydrates in the spring. This is a trick used by commercial growers to get more growth every year and to make more money by selling larger trees.

The energy for the initial leaf growth is contained in the buds. As the buds unfold in the spring and produce leaves they start pumping energy down to the roots while the roots pump water and food back to the leaves and growing points. The roots are much more efficient at getting these nutrients to the growth points if the ground is already full of them.
